When the sun comes out in Inverness, there’s no better way to enjoy it than with a cold drink in hand at one of the city’s many beer gardens or roof terraces. Despite its size, there’s a surprising number of places to relax outdoors in Inverness. Read on and discover a roundup of some of our favourites!
Playback Bar

If you’re after a roof terrace with great views, Playback is the place to be. This new kid on the block is a fab spot for sipping cocktails or a pint while taking in the sights of Inverness from above. The terrace catches the best of the sunshine on bright days, making it ideal for lazy afternoons with friends. Downstairs, the bar has a cool, contemporary feel with great tunes and an ever-changing drinks list — a brilliant addition to the Inverness social scene.
MacGregor’s

One of our favourites, especially when there’s live music! MacGregor’s offers a warm, friendly atmosphere with a fantastic outdoor space. Grab a craft beer or one of their fine whiskies and soak up the vibrant vibe, which is even better when the local musicians start playing.
Black Isle Bar

For those in the know, the Black Isle Bar’s secret garden is a must-visit. This eco-conscious spot serves delicious pizzas and a range of organic beers, and its charming garden feels like a hidden oasis in the middle of the city. Complete with fairy lights, rustic benches, little wooden cabins, the Black Isle Bar has that relaxed Highland buzz that makes it so special. Head through the main bar, up the stairs and you’ll find the garden located on the top of the building. If you’re staying in the city, there’s also a hostel upstairs, offering simple rooms right above the bar… ideal if you fancy rolling straight into bed after a night of craft beers and pizza!
Johnny Foxes

Located right by the River Ness, Johnny Foxes is a lively spot with an outdoor seating area perfect for people-watching. Known locally as ‘Foxes’, it’s one of Inverness’s most popular venues, offering good food and a fun atmosphere.
The Walrus & Corkscrew

Although its outdoor terrace is relatively small, this quirky wine bar on Church Street is definitely worth a visit. Known for its eclectic décor and cosy vibes, it’s a great place to enjoy a quieter moment in the heart of the city. We highly recommend their flights of wine and cheese + charcuterie boards.
Uile-bheist Distillery (Scottish Gaelic for ‘monster’ pronounced Ewl-uh-Vesht)

A newer addition to Inverness’s drinks scene, Uile‑bheist offers more than just craft whisky and beer – its outdoor terrace is a real highlight. Located on the banks of the River Ness at Ness Bank, the distillery‑brewery boasts a stylish Taproom and terrace space that invites you to sit back, enjoy a drink and take in the calm riverside setting. Founded in 2023 as the first distillery in Inverness in over a century, the place mixes modern architecture, low‑carbon tech and Highland myth (its name means “monster” in Gaelic) into a fresh outing.
The Waterside Restaurant

Just along from Uile-bheist distillery and situated right on the banks of the River Ness, The Waterside Restaurant offers a gorgeous outdoor terrace with beautiful views of the water. It’s a perfect spot for dining al fresco, especially in the warmer months. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely lunch or a romantic dinner, the tranquil riverside setting adds a special touch to the experience.
The Castle Tavern

With a clear view of Inverness Castle, The Castle Tavern is a classic pub that oozes character and provides a peaceful escape right in the heart of Inverness. Housed in a building dating back to the mid‑1700s, it retains its traditional feel while offering a welcoming beer garden – just across from the castle and a short stroll from the riverside.
The Innes Bar

Slightly outside the city centre, The Innes Bar is a true locals’ haunt. The outdoor seating area is laid-back and unpretentious, perfect if you’re looking for a more authentic Inverness pub experience.
Under Canvas at Eden Court [only in July & August]

For a unique outdoor experience, head to Under Canvas at Eden Court, a seasonal pop-up venue that runs only during July and August. Under Canvas is a must-visit if you’re in Inverness during the summer months and is a fantastic spot to grab a drink, enjoy great company, and listen to some of the Highlands’ best live acts, all under the canopy of a cosy marquee. Check Eden Court’s website for exact opening dates.
The Dores Inn

For those willing to venture a bit further, The Dores Inn is well worth the journey. Situated next to Dores Beach on the shores of Loch Ness, it offers stunning views and a relaxed beer garden – ideal after a scenic drive or walk along the shore. We absolutely love going there on a sunny day and it’s hands-down one of the best spots for views of Loch Ness.
